‘Pub of the Week’: The Jack Russell

When you think of a ‘destination pub’, the Jack Russell is the absolute definition of such a place. The winding country lanes of Faccombe give way to a grand, yet rustic building, surrounded by landscaped gardens, lined with neat flowerbeds throughout. There is even a large duck pond to the front, and spectacular views to the rear of the building across uninterrupted countryside.  Every way you look is aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Upon arrival, you instantly know that you’ll be looked after here. Large white umbrellas feature on each of the tables, providing plenty of cover – be it rain or shine- and there are baskets of soft woollen blankets and fire pits to keep everyone cosy throughout the evenings. They’ve pulled out all of the stops – no expense spared to make sure that the luxurious countryside experience you’d expect from them is exceeded. But the one things that is so striking about the Jack Russell, is the space . In a time of social distancing, space has never been so important. So well divided out are all of the outdoor dining areas that even parties of 6 can be safe and relaxed without ever feeling like you’re bumping shoulders with any one else. It also means that your four legged friends have lots of room and are also welcomed with open arms. Dog bowls and treats are readily available, alongside a lot of fuss! If the weather begins to let itself down, there is a large marquee, with lanterns, fairy lights and faux-fur coverings on every chair ready to welcome you in from the rain. Thanks to the spectacular setting, the incredible effort that the team have put into creating such a beautiful space and every comfort you could wish for,  the atmosphere is light and homely.

It’s table service only at the moment, but you’ll be given a full list of drinks available, and believe us when we say it’s very well stocked! The backbar is full of different spirits, including our Ramsbury gin which has been particularly popular this week – so much so it actually sold out! It has been perfect G&T weather, so we’re not surprised! There are a few ales to choose from too – from their own ale ‘Bertie’s Best’ which pays homage to their love of dogs and our very own Ramsbury Gold. Nothing can be enjoyed quite as much as a pint of Gold in this glorious setting it has to be said. Perhaps only topped when accompanied by one of the classic pub dishes for lunch. Speaking of which, on the menu, it’s kept as local and seasonal as can be. It’s a mirror of the landscape around them. Focussing on high-quality, exceptional dishes – whether that be traditional pub favourites, a selection of dry-aged steaks or the seasonal dishes, each item on the menu has been carefully selected.

When The Jack Russell reopens for room bookings in May, we highly recommend you spend more than just the afternoon here. Simply because it’s the perfect getaway – stay for dinner and you won’t want to leave just yet! But for now, spending the afternoon or evening in this glorious pub is a treat certainly worth giving yourself. For more information, or to book visit https://thejackrussellinn.com/
