Pub of the Week: The White Horse, Compton Bassett
An award winner is in our midst! The White Horse is truly tucked away down the beautiful country lanes of Compton Bassett. It sits on its very own little green, which is peppered with garden benches and flowerbeds, which surround accommodation and the pub itself. Through a large archway, labelled with the white horse emblem, synonymous with the chalk white horses that surround the area and give this pub its name (not to point out the obvious here!), you enter into the cosy bar area. The ceiling beams are lined with fairy lights, with ornaments and artwork on both the walls and windowsills which aptly reflect the pub’s name. There are old fashioned board games, and books to read – one can imagine it’s the perfect place to stop off with the dog, enjoy a pint and hunker down with a good novel. On the bar you’ll find local ales only, alongside our Ramsbury Gold and our craft lager Red Ram. Our gin is there too, if you’re a G&T fan, and is rather nice enjoyed in the large garden to the rear of the pub that looks out onto a field of docile sheep.
But there is much more to this pub than there seems upon first entering. A door off of the bar leads you to the restaurant. Each table is laid out to perfection and feels both spacious and intimate at the same time. The warm terracotta walls and lights create an ambience you simply can’t miss. The White Horse is renowned for its exceptional food, and has received Michelin plates, AA rosettes and features in the Good Pub Guide, to name but a few. The ethos is simple – ‘Keep it local and keep it seasonal’. Each dish and its ingredients is carefully thought out and sourced from suppliers in the West Country, with this in mind the menu is ever changing and always of excellent quality. Pair you meal with a fine wine, their selection of which is as exceptional as the food. Whether its long lunch, a special occasion or a weekend break away that you crave, this tranquil pub is quite the find.
