Pub of the Week: The Royal Oak, Yattendon

The Royal Oak is nestled just 7 miles outside of Newbury, in the idyllic village of Yattendon. When you arrive, the exterior exudes that of a classic English countryside inn and is the hub of the village. Its charm is undeniable, even before you enter. The front is lined by large parasols with their emblem and a bustling atmosphere, even at 3.30pm, which takes you back to not only the normality of visiting a pub, but embraces you in it. Inside, you’re met with two cosy areas to your left and right, each table delicately decorated and perfectly laid out, with fresh flowers and rustic table tops. There are several large fireplaces for when it is a little chilly too – one can imagine that throughout the colder months the pub is filled with the warmth and rich smell of that synonymous with a cosy winter.  This leads you to the beamed bar, complete with a carefully selected line-up of local ales, as well as lagers and a plentiful spirits offering. Our Ramsbury Gold features on draught, and is a particular favourite with the locals – in fact 6 additional casks were requested from us on the second week of their opening!

On from the bar, there are several different rooms for different occasions available to book, all with slightly different looks and feels, but still very much a part of the same family. They make perfect spaces for parties of larger numbers, and with boutique guest rooms also available to book, it makes it a wonderful destination inn, or even a wedding venue. To the rear of the pub is the open kitchen, with a proper woodfired stone pizza oven for a theatrical touch, which sits in ‘The Orangery’. A wonderfully light, spacious area, complete with skylights and twinkling maple tree to its centre. Ideal for fine dining in the summer months, folding doors lead out onto the large landscaped garden. Choose to perch yourself on the comfy sofas, under the pergola or in the sun, the garden is quite simply, a haven. Neatly kept flowers and a water feature create the most tranquil of atmospheres. The look and feel of The Orangery and the garden together feels almost as if you have travelled to Southern France.

Whether its an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, a traditional Sunday lunch or drinks with friends, the Royal Oak is a venue which delivers for every occasion. For more information or to book visit https://royaloakyattendon.co.uk/
